Spiritual Fertilizers: Habits & Postures For Living into our Rhythms

What’s in your spiritual soil?

In the section on spiritual rhythms, I talked about how all disciples of Jesus need a healthy diet of four spiritual nutrients/rhythms in order to grow and thrive as disciples of Jesus. If we are missing any one them, we will languish in some way when it comes to our growth and resiliency in Jesus. That said, how we go about pursuing these rhythms/nutrients can vary, and in fact will vary across person and even time. Just as there are numerous kinds of fertilizers to ensure that a garden has an adequate amount of Phosphorus, Nitrogen, and Potassium, there are numerous practices that can ensure we live into these rhythms. You can find book after book written about such practices, and this is good, but it can also be overwhelming.

So before we get into practices, I like to talk about the overarching habits and postures of the heart that can help us live into these rhythms over time; I call these spiritual fertilizers These are various ways of approaching each rhythm that can help to deepen that rhythm in our hearts and minds. For each rhythm, there are four habits/fertilizers, and for each habit, there are endless numbers of practices. So, below, I am going to give an overview of these habits & postures, and then if you will like to dive deeper, you can continue on in you reading and practice.
